Wide Range Force Transducers for PowerLab
The Wide Range Force Transducer is a wide-range (0.01 to 1000 g wt), semiisometric, strain-gauge transducer incorporating a leaf spring of 5 stainless steel blades. Four of these blades are removable, allowing the stiffness of the transducer to be easily adjusted for the required sensitivity. The MLT1030/D transducer is suitable for connection to any ADInstruments Bridge Amp, while the MLT1030/A is suitable for connection to the ML301 Bridge Pod.

Operation:
The transducer consists of five blades: the fixed top blade is fitted with two highoutput, silicon semiconductor strain gauges. One of these changes in resistance with applied force and the other compensates for changes in temperature. To use the transducer, attach its bar to an adjustable support. Attach a wire, thread, or hook to the end of the blades, either directly or to a bolt passing through the holes in the ends. Attach the other end of the thread to the object to be measured (a tissue sample, for instance). Move the transducer up the support mast until the string is tight, making sure the blades do not bend.
Application:
The Wide Range Force Transducer is suitable for measurements of muscle contractions or similar forces from 10 mg wt to 1 kg wt. The transducer is suited for use with a wide range of biological preparations involving both large and small animals, including:
- Demonstration of Starling's Law
- Gastrocnemius/sciatic nerve preparations
- Closing force of clam shells
- Lingual-mandibular reflex
